Status Reporting

TTool · Status Reporting

By , Editor · · What’s Next

The weekly update goes out. Nobody reads it. When problems surface, the stakeholder says they weren't told — even though it was in paragraph four.

Status reporting is a trust instrument disguised as a progress tracker. You write concise, consistent updates focused on what the audience needs to know — variances from the plan and the actions taken — rather than a log of what the team found interesting that week.

A four-step horizontal flow numbered 01 to 04, labelled CADENCE, VARIANCE, PLAIN, and DISTRIBUTE, each with a line of guidance (weekly same shape; what changed and why; no status-speak; to people who can act). A banner reads "Lead with the variance. The team finds out anyway."
