Value vs Effort Matrix

TTool · Value vs Effort Matrix

By , Editor · · What’s Next

The backlog is long. Everyone wants different things. You need a way to compare them that a room full of stakeholders can understand in five minutes.

The Value vs Effort Matrix is a prioritisation tool that plots initiatives on two axes: value delivered versus effort required. Four quadrants emerge — Quick Wins, Big Bets, Fill-Ins, and Time Sinks. You place each item, then let the grid do the arguing.

A 2x2 matrix with axes labelled value and effort, splitting work into four quadrants: quick wins (do first), big bets (plan carefully), time sinks (capacity hides here, first cuts), and fill-ins (fit between bigger work).
