In late 1915, during the Great Retreat of the Serbian Army through the Albanian mountains under Austro-Hungarian, German, and Bulgarian attack, Flora Sandes was serving as an auxiliary nurse attached to the Second Infantry Regiment.

On 18 May 1900, a small group of journalists, naturalists, and civic-minded Californians camped along Sempervirens Creek — in the redwood basin south of San Francisco that today carries the name Big Basin Redwoods State Park — and at that campsite founded the Sempervirens Club.
